History of the Courtyard Gallery

Kay Thrasher

Two questions most often asked of artists are, "How long did it take you to paint that?" and "What prompted you to do that particular subject?" To the first question I say, all our lives. We had to learn to draw, to paint, and to see, and that is constantly evolving. To the second question there are many answers. For me it is a fleeting glance at something that inspires me, the subject matter (which fluctuates), and feelings, and all of the above. The most common comment I hear about my paintings is their peacefulness.

I have been interested in all aspects of art ever since I can remember. I have taken workshops from some well known artists and more from not so well known ones. They were all inspiring and taught me something. However, for the most part I am constantly studying, experimenting, and am mainly self taught. Art and the expression of it is who I am.

My husband and I moved to Colorado in late 2003. It was a very spiritual move for me. The mountains welcomed me home and inspired my soul. My spirituality and art has expanded over time as I take in more and more of this wondrous place. Prior to our move we lived in Wichita, Kansas, where I taught watercolor and drawing classes for more than eight years. I have worked in ceramics, oil, charcoal, pen and ink, pastel and watercolor and won awards in both oil and watercolor. Recently acrylics have been added to my favorite list of mediums and that has brought with it new inspiration. I have exhibited at many places, sold privately as well, and done commissioned work.

Presently in Chaffee County, I am a member of Art of the Rockies and Arkansas Valley Art Center as well as being a co-owner of The Courtyard Gallery & Gifts in Buena Vista, Colorado. My art can be seen at The Courtyard Gallery & Gifts, Buffalo Bar & Grill, Vista Courts, and the South Main Project office all in Buena Vista. Additional work may be seen at The Purple Sage Grill near Salida.
